Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) therapy is a form of psychotherapy designed to aid individuals in healing from the symptoms and emotional turmoil stemming from distressing life events.

Numerous research studies have demonstrated that EMDR therapy can yield therapeutic benefits typically associated with psychotherapy, but in a shorter timeframe. Traditionally, it’s been believed that severe emotional distress necessitates prolonged treatment. However, over 30 controlled outcome studies have provided evidence supporting the effectiveness of EMDR therapy.

These studies indicate that a significant percentage of individuals – ranging from 84% to 90% – who have experienced a single traumatic event no longer exhibit symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after undergoing just three 90-minute sessions of EMDR therapy.

EMDR has been widely researched and found effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related disorders. It’s also used to address a range of other mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, phobias, and grief. Moreover, EMDR therapy can be integrated with other therapeutic modalities to enhance its effectiveness.

The core technique of EMDR involves the therapist guiding the client through sets of bilateral stimulation, typically through horizontal eye movements, but also tapping or auditory cues. This bilateral stimulation is thought to engage the brain’s natural processing mechanisms, allowing traumatic memories to be reprocessed in a more adaptive and less distressing manner.
